1855-1916. US astronomer, who, by
mathematical calculation, started the search
for `Planet X' beyond Neptune, which led to
the discovery of Pluto in 1930. In 1894 he
founded the Lowell Observatory at Flagstaff,
Arizona, where he reported seeing `canals'
(now known to be optical artefacts) on the
surface of Mars.
