  1. 1855-1916. US astronomer, who, by
  2. mathematical calculation, started the search
  3. for `Planet X' beyond Neptune, which led to
  4. the discovery of Pluto in 1930. In 1894 he
  5. founded the Lowell Observatory at Flagstaff,
  6. Arizona, where he reported seeing `canals'
  7. (now known to be optical artefacts) on the
  8. surface of Mars.
